This is a list of the main externally funded projects in which I have been involved – it does not include those funded by my home institutions as parts of curriculum and staff development projects, or commissioned research and evaluation contracts.
University of the Witwatersrand Black High School Partnership
1999, Educational Consultant
An evaluation of ‘Netschools’ in South Africa, evaluating the impact of network technologies on the secondary schools involved; identifying business models for their sustainable development and opportunities for further community involvement through the establishment of schools as local ‘telecentres’.
Learning how to Learn in Classrooms, Schools and Networks
2001-2005, Member of Project Management Team
‘Learning how to Learn’ was a four year, $980,000 project involving four Universities working in partnership with 40 schools in the UK. The project was established in order to build upon work in three areas: the first of these was the use of formative assessment or ‘assessment for learning’ in diverse classroom settings; the second was on how to support organisational change and the development of innovative practice at school level; and the third was the role of networks in supporting school-to-school transfer of knowledge and practice.
Education for Development and CEOSS
2002-2003, Educational Consultant
This was a development project in Egypt for the Coptic Evangelical Organisation for Social Services, an ‘umbrella’ NGO. This involved working with local partners to develop a web-based resource base for the Talaat Harb Training Centre in Cairo and its satellite organisations, local consultants and trainers.
Cambridge-MIT Knowledge Resource Network
2004-2005, Senior Researcher
The Knowledge Resource Network (KRN) was conceived as a digital repository of teaching and learning materials related to a series of innovative MPhil programmes set up under the Cambridge-MIT Institute and dealing with areas of new technology and their impact on policy and practice. The repository was supported by a series of events and online environments designed to support the establishment of ‘communities of practice’ across the HE sector.
Sakai: A VRE for Educational Research
2004-2006, Senior Researcher
This two year, £550,000 JISC project involved the provision and support of the Sakai Virtual Collaboration Platform for large, distributed social sciences research projects within the Teaching and Learning Research Programme. The project investigated the needs of the researchers and evaluated the extent to which Sakai meets those needs. This research informed software development and the creation of a set of new tools for use by researchers engaged in online collaboration.
Online Impact Evaluation: National College of School Leadership
2005-2006, Member of Evaluation Team
This is an evaluation, led by the Open University, of the online elements of some of the leadership programmes of the National College of School Leadership. This used a combination of a large-scale survey, case studies and electronic usage data to inform the future development of NCSL programmes and the commissioning of new online resources.
Representing Context in a Research Archive of Educational Evaluations
2005-2006, Director and Principal Investigator
This was an 18-month, $90,000 project, funded by ESRC and involving CARET and the Centre for Applied Research in Education at UEA. The project has involved the establishment of a research archive of educational case studies drawing on the work of participants from around the world in the ‘Cambridge Conferences’, on educational evaluation, which have been taking place since 1972. A selected set of case studies, together with the case records upon which they draw and a range of other contextual data allow users of the archive to engage critically with case studies which in many instances have played a role in defining the aims and methods of qualitative educational research.
Teaching for Learning Network
This was an 18-month project funded by the Cambridge-MIT Institute (£378,000) to develop, implement and evaluate innovative approaches to teaching and learning development in Higher Education. TfLN was been designed as a network supporting both intensive collaboration within its constituent projects and ‘at-a-distance’ sharing of approaches, interpretative frameworks, findings and outcomes. The project focused on biological sciences and engineering, although much of the effective practice had wider applications.
2006-2007, Director and Principal Investigator
‘Transforming Perspectives: Technology to Support Teaching and Learning of Threshold Concepts’ was a six-month, £60,000 development project within the ESRC/EPSRC Technology-Enhanced Learning Programme – part of the Teaching and Learning Research Programme. This project established an interdisciplinary network in order to develop strategies for technology-enhanced teaching and learning of ‘threshold concepts’ across ten disciplines in higher education.
A Social and Professional Network for Early Career Researchers in Education
2008-2009, Director and Principal Investigator
This 12-month, £98,000 ESRC project offered early career researchers in education the opportunity to take part in the ‘co-configuration’ of their own sustainable network and the online tools that enable and enhance it, based on resources and services developed by the TLRP, NCRM and Research Capacity Building Network and realised using emerging models of ‘social software’. This project built on previous development and research work in the areas of capacity building and virtual research environments, and engaged participants in high-quality research symposia and training activities drawing on the resources of the ESRC Research Capacity Building Network; identification of areas of common interest and potential areas of network development; and ‘envisioning’ and design activities to inform the development of ‘OpenSocial’ applications to address their needs as researchers.
Ensemble: Semantic Technologies for the Enhancement of Case Based Learning
2008-2012, Director and Principal Investigator
Ensemble was a project jointly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council under the Technology Enhanced Learning Programme to explore the potential of the semantic web and linked data technologies to support teaching in complex, controversial and rapidly-evolving fields where case based learning is the pedagogical approach of choice. The three-year, £1.5 million project brought together educational researchers and technologists from universities in the UK, the USA and Australia, with visiting fellows from Spain and Germany.
The project worked with teachers and students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses (biosciences, environmental sciences, engineering, education, archaeology and dance) at Liverpool John Moores University, Cambridge University and City University London to explore both the nature and role of the cases around which learning is focused, and the part that emerging Semantic Web technologies and techniques can play in supporting this learning. It recognised that teaching and learning environments are complex and evolving, and that participants in these environment may have multiple identities – as teachers, learners, researchers and workers. The learning technologies they use need to be robust yet flexible enough to support teachers and learners as they grapple with complex situations and develop creative solutions.
Ontology-Based E-Assessment for Accounting Education
2008-2012, Director and Principal Investigator
This was a 15-month, £16,000 project funded by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the International Accounting Education Standards Board to explore the potential for the development of e-Assessment based on subject ontologies and offering a wider range of assessment opportunities and formative feedback through the use of semantic web technologies.
Enhancing Reflection in Clinical Legal Education
This was a project funded by the Legal Education Research Network to explore student learning in the context of university-based legal education clinics.
