My Work

Published by admin

I am Professor of Education at the School of Education, University of Stirling, a post I took up in May 2012.  Prior to this I was Professor of Educational Research in the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure at Liverpool John Moores University. From 2005-2009, I worked at the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies at Cambridge University, where I was Head of the Evaluation Group, a team of of educational researchers and evaluators. Prior to moving to CARET, I was a Lecturer in the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education, where I was a member of the School Improvement and Leadership Team and a tutor on the Faculty’s MEd Programmes.

From 2001-2005 I was a member of Learning how to Learn, a component project of the ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme and have been PI and director of a number of educational and education technology research projects. I am director of ‘Ensemble‘, a major ESRC/EPSRC research project that is part of the Technology-Enhanced Learning Programme. This project has been exploring the potential of emerging ‘Semantic Web’ technologies to support and enhance case based learning in different disciplines in higher education.

My research is mainly in the area of professional development and research capacity-building, and in particular the role played by network technologies in supporting research and enabling new research approaches, methods and relationships. I also have interests and experience in development education and classroom practice across educational settings and sectors. I have recently finished writing (with Prof Bob McCormick, Alison Fox and Richard Procter) a book on teacher networks for Routledge and a further research monograph, ‘Networking Research’ (on research networks in education) for Continuum.

I am a member of Association of Learning Technologies Research Committee.
